Can one fail a drug test using hemp CBD oil?

Yes, is the long and short of it but there are options to avoid this! Selecting the product that fits your needs is key so do your research or visit a trusted retailer for direction. Remember too, that sourcing and quality matters. One study revealed that up to 70% of online CBD products are mislabeled (1). Yikes! We’re not saying don’t buy online but be a conscious consumer for your health. Luckily, there are lots of local options with educated employees and why not utilize the free advice for your purchases?!

Picking your product

If you are subject to drug-testing for any reason, whether it’s your employer, the doctor’s office or the judicial system, it is wise to select an isolate CBD oil for ingestion. Isolates are stripped of THC; therefore, you are less likely to fail a urinalysis. For localized relief and nourished skin, topical CBD looks to be safe to use without fear of THC entering the bloodstream (2). There are instances of isolates causing a false positive. Second hand exposure to THC or false labeling is most often the culprit. In any case, further testing (chromatography) can rule out the presence of high blood levels of THC.

On the other hand, full spectrum oils are more likely to cause trouble with testing, because they contain low amounts of THC. Taking particularly high doses of full-spectrum CBD in the 1000-2000mg range can increase concentrations of THC in the body and with unparalleled absorption, transdermal patches containing THC will likely result in a failed drug test, so choose THC free here as well. Be sure to review third-party testing results to confirm that THC amounts are non-existent for isolates or below .3% in full-spectrum oils. Isolate CBD is helpful to many and most find the relief they desire without THC. Others will prefer the “entourage effect” that comes with full-spectrum oils and that is totally cool! We suggest a break from full-spectrum oil if there’s a drug test in your near future. How long will depend on your dose, your body’s metabolism and the test being utilized, so this will be different person to person – err on the side of caution.

Be Proactive

We highly recommend you know your company’s drug-testing policy and your state laws. With the recent passing of the federal Farm Bill, hemp and CBD from hemp are protected from illegality but state laws may still differ. Hopefully, this will all become clearer as we continue to use and research hemp CBD oil and will bring about law reform and drug-testing reform which will benefit consumers and companies alike. Fortunately, it’s becoming quite normal to utilize hemp CBD products and with responsible companies making quality products while educating the public we can expect the stigma around this plant medicine to eventually die out!

Communicate your needs

Questions about CBD are many and we advise to ALWAYS ask your questions. The subject of CBD and Drug Testing is one FAQ that should be addressed with every customer! It’s a good idea for retailers to begin with this subject when educating consumers on CBD oil. If your retailer can’t answer your questions, we’d be happy to help – just give DREEM a call 😉
